15 years of the web?

According to MSN news the World Wide Web is 15 today, but the BBC dates this anniversary as far back as the 5th of August 2006. Windows communication foundation recognises the release of the first web browser celebrating its 15 years on the April 22, 1993. However today is the anniversary of when web technology and the code that makes the internet works became free for anyone to use and improve from it’s original concept, and this is the one most of us associate with the internet we use today.

So today is the anniversary of technology that brought us;

Search engines – so that you can find what you are looking for on the internet and SEO (search engine optimisation) means that everyone has a chance of being top of their search. Search engines also reduce the time it takes to find things, typing a word on the internet tends to be a lot quicker than searching the phone book.

E-commerce – this means your business is no longer limited to customers from where ever your company is based. Not only can you reach a larger audience, you can shop from the comfort of your own home. For the last quarter of last year, in the US alone this was a $36.2 billion industry, that’s just one reason to get involved.

Blogs – you can share with the rest of the world who you are and what you do. The internet is all about sharing information, not only does it inform the world what is happening and changing in your company but offers the chance of offer some search engine friendly text.

E-mail and viral marketing – not only can you reach your current customers with maximum exposure for a minimum cost, you can send gentle reminders that you are here. Viral marketing allows your customers do the leg work for you, making your news interesting means people want to share what you have to say, so they pass on the message to others who seem interested.

Social networking – not only can you keep up to date with what your friends are doing, they can see what you are doing. This offers the perfect opportunity for your business to get involved, people find the internet a happy distraction when you are supposed to be working, so why not be distracted by your company.

    The internet has been a major benefactor in helping me research especially for essays and projects as I finish University this year. This blog pretty much sums up what I use the web for, although I tend to use social networking sites a little more than I should! Cannot believe its 15, I cant remember a time without the net and I know I for one would certainly struggle without it!!
