Web Developer (Maternity Cover)
We’re looking for a Web Developer to join our team on a permanent contract for 12 months starting September 2021.
This is a maternity cover placement. However the agency and team are growing rapidly so there is the chance that this could evolve into a permanent role beyond 12 months.
Established 20 years ago, Cite is a longstanding successful agency in the heart of Leicester. Having started developing websites when the internet was emerging as a ‘thing’, Cite has evolved over the years to become a full service digital agency.
More recently, at the start of 2021 Cite merged with Well & Truly, a brand and insight agency. The merger has strengthened the strategic capabilities of the agency and moved us into a new arena, as a full service creative agency, building successful brands that thrive in a digital first world.
Our vision is to give brands and their owners the confidence, courage and inspiration to go further.
We’ll do this by; connecting insight with creativity and strategic thinking. By bringing fresh perspectives and original ideas that allow our clients and their brands to shine. By seeking out and utilising the very latest innovative technologies. And by building a confident and courageous team who feel empowered to achieve great things.
About the role
You’ll have the opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects, across various platforms (primarily with WordPress, Drupal, Laravel, but others as new technologies and client requirements emerge), for a wide range of clients. From platforms for the NHS to incite positive behaviour change and encourage people to live healthier lives, to multi-language, multi territory websites for some of the fastest growing software tech companies coming out of the Nordics!
You’ll be a key member of the development team, with the opportunity to collaborate with members of the design and project management teams. They’re a talented, creative and friendly bunch who understand that our best work is produced when all teams work together closely.
This role will be perfect for someone who relishes a challenge, working alongside a friendly and supportive team with bags of experience. You’ll be given support to expand and grow your skill set alongside fresh and new opportunities to grow your portfolio.
We’re looking for someone with experience in developing enterprise level platforms and technologies , but we don’t mind where you got it. Agency, freelance, University or just worked it out for yourself; we’re really keen to see what you’ve been working on.
You’ll have the opportunity to own and run with projects when you’re ready. Our senior developers are there to help guide and support. We have clear and strong coding principles to ensure the team can work seamlessly together and support each other across multiple projects. We have also just launched a big update to our WordPress starter theme that we are excited to see get used in production.
In this role, you will be expected to:
- Design innovative solutions to technical problems, and estimate the effort and time required to deliver them
- Develop bespoke themes and plugins within WordPress and/or Drupal
- Use modern front-end build tools; preprocessors, task runners, bundlers and build pipelines, in your workflow
- Use version control and branching to enable successful teamwork
- Uphold principles such as web standards, web accessibility, responsive design, and page performance
- Test your work across a variety of devices and platforms, and invite other team members to do the same
- Work with designs from Adobe XD and similar design software
- Get creative about the small details that make a real difference to our clients and demonstrate the high quality of your work
If you also have experience with the below, it will really help you to hit the ground running when you start with us, but these aren’t essential. You’ll have lots of opportunities to learn along the way:
- E-commerce platforms such as Shopify and WooCommerce
- Static site generators and headless/decoupled CMS
- PHP architectural patterns, and frameworks like Laravel and Symfony
- Creating custom WordPress Gutenberg blocks
What you can expect from us
We have a variety of perks and benefits…
The flexibility to craft your own working arrangements. We have a beautiful Leicester city centre office, and an inspiring and welcoming team of people. We’ll have a desk you can make your own, whether you want to be in every day or once a year.
For this role, we are offering full flexibility on where you want to be based. 100% remote, 100% office based, or somewhere in between. If you’re the right person to work as part of our team, we’re not too bothered if that means we only see you via the medium of Zoom if that’s what you prefer.
A fair salary
Our salary structure is inline with market rates for our area, and is based on your personal skills and experience that you will bring to our team culture and the value you bring to our clients, not just based on the number of years on your CV.
Our core values centre around collaboration, courage, openness and brilliance. Which means;
- We work together as a tight and supportive team
- We’re brave and inspire clients to push further, knowing we have the support of each other, the experience of a diverse range of skills and capabilities, and some great work to back ourselves up.
- We’re open, honest and supportive with each other (we all have good days and bad days – and that’s okay!)
And, when we do all of this, the brilliance happens and together we produce outstanding work.
We hold monthly all agency team meetings, to bring everyone up to speed on how the agency is doing, new business wins, and other company news. Our quarterly Creative Review sessions are an opportunity to celebrate the great work to have come out of the agency in the past few months.
We’re dedicated to supporting our local creative community. We’re key sponsors of Create Leicester – running a number of events each year to bring the creative community together to learn from each other and help to promote the region as a key creative hub within the UK.
We support a number of local Leicester based charities including LAMP (Mental Health Charity) and Hope Against Cancer. Last year we raised over £2000 thanks to our Inter-agency Charity Christmas Quiz, a 5km awareness walk around Leicester, our unwanted Christmas present ebay auctions and all of AMEX points are converted each year to charity donations.
Your line manager will be our Head of Web, alongside our Operations Director. You’ll have regular catch-ups each week on the projects you are working on, and daily check-ins if you are working remotely. We run quarterly 1-2-1s to give you a forum to discuss things that have gone well, and perhaps not so well, set some objectives for the next few months, and look further ahead to your career development within the agency. Pay reviews are annual in November each year.
Holidays, drinks and lunches
We offer 31 days holiday (including bank holidays) – including your birthday off and an agency shutdown over Christmas. We take everyone out for a payday lunch (if you’re remote just expense your lunch back to us). And there’s regular pub nights and team socials.
Bonuses for everyone
In addition to the salary, we offer three bonus schemes.
Financial Bonus: Linked to our annual profit targets and all employees are eligible once they have completed 12 months continuous employment.
Innovation bonus: Got great ideas? We want to hear them and provide lots of opportunities for you to share them and be rewarded for the ones that we adopt.
Culture bonus: For those that are recognised by the whole team for really embodying our agency values of collaboration, openness, innovation and brilliance.
Training, development and skill shares
And last but not least, we want to make sure you have the opportunity for personal development with us, and ensure we all continue to learn, grow and evolve as a collective.
We run a comprehensive internal training and skillshare programme that covers a wide range of pertinent topics, providing an opportunity to learn from each other and the great skills we have within our team. Every staff member can take advantage of bespoke external training as needed. We also attend regional and national conferences, to learn more about the industry, meet people, and feel inspired.
