SEO intern reflects on his time at Cite

One of our Autumn SEO interns, Max, recently got a job and we couldn’t be happier for him. The following blog post is his reflection on his time at Cite.

Writing effective SEO content is not too dissimilar from writing a catchy pop song, both have to follow a certain structure, adhere to certain conventions, and ultimately they have to work well. As an SEO intern I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started at Cite, but I soon learned that there’s more to search engine optimisation than meets the eye. A good knowledge of SEO practices really pays off, and one of the most important things I learned was that trying to convey information creatively and with a good pinch of excitement is key to making the content worthwhile, informative and engaging.

Online marketing internship

Upon starting my internship at Cite I was initially shown how to use CMS programs, like WordPress and Joomla, and how to use social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter, for marketing purposes. After my training, I wrote. I wrote a lot. I was given the responsibility of looking after numerous clients and was trusted to perform tasks for them to the high standards that Cite operates its business at, a status-quo that I hope I didn‘t disrupt!

Although the initial start was tough (as is any fresh career venture) and there was a bit of a learning curve, I found that I was soon in my element. I was made to feel one of the team and was definitely getting more stuck in with day-to-day tasks. My experience was a far departure from the typical tea-boy-come-internship that students and graduates often hear horror stories about.

Some people questioned why I would want to work for free, and it’s probably the foremost problem of all unpaid internships. No one wants to work for free, but there is a recession on (in case you haven’t heard) and it is more essential than ever that graduates show initiative and a desire to work in the field that interests them. And anyway, I didn’t see it as unpaid work, that is far too negative, a free education sounds far better, and is more accurate. After all, it is a short-term pain which is hopefully (as it was for me) for a long-term gain.  Even if you have a bit of experience already, an internship gives you an edge against your competition, and in the current working climate where numerous graduates are all competing for that first step on the working ladder an internship really helps.

I would highly recommend Cite’s internship program, not only has it been an essential bridge for me and my career but it also was a genuinely fun few months spent with people who treat you as a colleague and also have a passion for digital marketing and website design.  I wish them and their program every success.
