Pinterest tips for business

Pinterest has taken the social media world by storm and although the site is still only in beta, it is now responsible for more referral traffic than YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.  Pinterest has even given some websites a triple-digit increase of web traffic, and many social media experts think it is just getting started.  To help you make the most out of your Pinterest marketing campaign, our social media agency has put together these Pinterest tips for business.

Pinterest tips for business
Analyse your audience’s presence: While the majority of Pinterest’s users are women aged 25-44, there are opportunities to reach people in other demographics.  Before starting a Pinterest campaign, do some market research to see if your customers use Pinterest and if your products or services would be of interest to people on the social network.  Popular genres on Pinterest include DIY crafts, recipes, fashion, room décor, and travel destinations, so if you work in any of those industries then Pinterest is definitely worth looking into.

Get creative with your pins: In order to generate traffic to your website, you’ll have to make your pins stand out among all the other great photos on Pinterest.  Get creative with the way you show your images to make people interested in learning more.  Service-based businesses can be successful on Pinterest but they may need to be even more creative about what pins they put up. For example, a travel agent may pin images of dream vacation destinations or tips on how to pack a suitcase, while a restaurant could pin images from recipes available on their website. Coupons are another great option that will grab people’s attention and drive them to your website.

Use high quality images: If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, then we’d hate to know what it’s saying about small low-res photos on Pinterest.  On the whole, images on Pinterest are beautiful and well-photographed, so a poor quality photo just won’t cut it. Our web designers cringe every time they see low-quality images on websites, and we don’t want to see the same mistake made on Pinterest.

Share content: While some businesses have many interesting photos at their disposal, other companies may need to turn raw data into infographics in order to fill their boards.  Infographics are an easy way to showcase useful information while looking good and generating attention. Blog posts and top tips can also be shared through Pinterest, but make sure the images associated with them are visually appealing.

Consider a competition: Pinterest is a great platform to run a competition and companies should consider the option when planning a Pinterest marketing strategy.  Encourage people to use a specific hashtag, pin their own images to a board you create or ask people to share photos of themselves using your product. Not only does this generate interest in your company, but it will help your company go viral on Pinterest.

Don’t forget the landing page: Pinterest is a great way to drive people to your website, so in addition to creating interesting pins, you will also need to optimise the landing page to increase sales once traffic has arrived. People have come to the page to get more information on whatever was featured in the pin, so make sure all that information is there.  Include a call to action, whether that is to buy a product, contact you, or look at the rest of your site, and keep the same look and feel as the pin that brought people to the site in the first place.

Don’t just market yourself: Like any other social media strategy, businesses should use Pinterest as a way to engage with their audience.  Share interesting pins that you think your audience would like and take part in any conversations people are having on pins related to your company, brand, or industry. We recommend no more than one-third of your pins be marketing material.

Remember SEO: Use keywords within the image description so people can find your pin when doing a search.  You’ll also want to make sure that your pin is put into a relevant board so people doing a genre search can also find it.  Be careful not to over-optimise your description, otherwise people may flag your pin up as spam. Like Twitter, Pinterest makes use of hashtags, so use them in order to improve your pin’s visibility.

Create a theme: Try to think of themed pins that your company can roll out on a regular basis for people to collect. You can do this by using the same mascot in multiple pins, numbering pins, or progressively telling a story with pins.  Consider releasing these pins on a single day or on the same day every week, depending on your social media marketing goals.

Include videos: In addition to images, include some videos that showcase your products, answer frequently asked questions, or share information about your company.

With these Pinterest tips, your company’s social media marketing strategy should improve.  For more information on how our social media agency can help you implement a campaign, develop Facebook apps and manage your accounts, please contact us today.
