The Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain (PESGB) is a global membership organisation that promotes scientific and technical education within petroleum exploration and earth sciences. It provides a range of benefits to its members including events and networking services, plus an extensive funding programme for training.
Following extensive research and mapping of the membership sign up and event registration processes, we embarked on a complete web design and build, including a WordPress CMS for managing content updates. WordPress plugin, Event Espresso, was introduced to facilitate event registration and enable online bookings, plus InfusionSoft CRM and Marketing were integrated to manage membership communications and renewals.

PESGB was established in 1964 and has 5,000+ active members. Approaching us in 2016, they were looking to grow their membership base and increase community engagement. The bespoke membership database being used was outdated and many of its administrative processes were labour intensive. We were briefed to update the website, improve the content management systems (CMS) and find a platform which could automate membership and event administration.
Researching and mapping the membership
To understand the best solution for increasing membership and reducing administration, both teams got together to thoroughly research and map out the membership and events processes, from information and enrolment to renewals and registrations.
We worked closely with PESGB to fully understand the organisation and user requirements to try and automate as many office processes as possible. These ranged from membership applications and approvals, annual renewals through to finance reports, and personalising content to promote member benefits.
Working on the website
PESGB’s website is an essential part of their membership support, hosting a vast range of detail about member services and benefits, including information on evening lectures, conferences and seminars, maps and a dedicated members area.
From research findings, we carried out user experience planning (UX) and developed an information architecture framework to create user friendly and modern design, which would work well across multiple devices. The updated tiled design now provides simple navigation and clear calls to action to encourage users to move through the site and easily find the information they need.
Capturing content with WordPress CMS
As a membership organisation offering education and knowledge sharing, PESGB has a wealth of content — including news, blogs, video and photo archives, ways to get involved, educational resources and conference and seminar schedules.
The dynamic nature of the content needed to be easily updated and managed within the backend of the website. We built a content management system in WordPress which enabled simple content updates to be made which feed simply into the tiled design of the site.
Managing member relationships and marketing automation with InfusionSoft
To automate membership management administration and improve community communications, we integrated InfusionSoft CRM and Marketing modules into the solution. The software enabled PESGB to build relationships and engage with its members through personalised, automated communications or follow-ups triggered by different events, such as new member sign ups, event registrations, and membership renewal dates.
It also enables PESGB to segment their customer data, so they are able to track events members have attended, and develop much more targeted marketing campaigns to encourage repeat bookings or personalise content to initiatives that they may find interesting.

Repeat visitors to the website have increased and feedback from users has been positive, with many taking advantage of the online member directory and the ability to track their orders in the “My Account” section.
We continue to work with PESGB, continually evolving the site and its functionality, based on feedback from members and the PESGB team.
