Facebook has announced a new feature that allows users to embed almost any type of Facebook post into external websites. Internet users are already familiar with embeddable content, as it is widely available on other social networks like YouTube, Twitter, Vine and Instagram, but with 1.1 billion monthly users, Facebook is expected to take embedding to a whole new level. The new feature signals Facebook’s effort (alongside hashtags and Graph Search) to become part of the larger Internet, instead of expecting the Internet to be embedded into it.
Embedded Facebook posts were launched on July 31, but not everybody has the privilege to use it just yet. Currently the feature is only available to big online publishers and news sites, such as The Huffington Post, PEOPLE, Mashable, CNN and Bleacher Report, but it will be available to the rest of us over the coming weeks.
The feature allows users to embed different types of posts, including those that contain photos, videos, hashtags or links. Once embedded into a website, other Facebook users can ‘Share’, ‘Like’ or comment on the content directly from the embedded post.
It is worth noting that the only posts that can be embedded are those that are accessible to the public, so users won’t be given the option to embed anything with privacy restrictions. If somebody embeds one of your public posts, you will not get a notification about it.
Once the feature becomes available to the masses, it will be simple to use. All you’ll have to do is click on the ‘Embed Post’ option, which will be found in a dropdown menu in the top right-hand corner of the post. Once selected, a dialogue will appear with an embed code for you to put into your website.
We recommend that brands and marketers take advantage of this new feature in their online marketing strategies. For example, embedding posts from your Facebook Page into your website will be a great way of reaching audiences who may not already like your Page. This will allow them to follow your Facebook conversation and encourage them to get involved. Additionally, you’ll be able to showcase Facebook apps and competitions by embedding your posts that promote them, so people can see the reaction the apps get from your followers.
While we all anxiously wait for embedded Facebook posts to become available to everyone, get in touch with our digital agency to find out how we can help you with your social media marketing or Facebook apps.
